Introduction

Shopify Inspector is a Chrome Extension that detects the Shopify theme and apps used on the website you are currently viewing. We built it to be useful without being invasive: we do not require an account, we do not ask for any personal information, and we collect only what we need to identify themes and apps and to improve the product.

This Privacy Policy explains what information the Extension and our website at inspector.ecommatica.com collect, how it is used, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

Anonymous identifier. When you install the Extension, we generate a random identifier and store it in your browser. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any account credentials. We use it to count unique installations, to associate optional uninstall feedback with the install that submitted it, and for product analytics.

Information about the page you inspect. When you open the Extension on a Shopify store, we send the page's URL and the Shopify theme and app information published by that page to our server so we can identify the theme and apps and return the result to you. If the page is not a Shopify store, the Extension does not send anything.

Product analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the Extension is used — for example, how many people open it each day and which apps and themes are clicked. Analytics events are tied to the anonymous identifier described above.

Optional uninstall feedback. When you uninstall the Extension, your browser opens a feedback page where you may, optionally, leave a short note explaining why. If you submit feedback, we store the text together with the anonymous identifier.

Server logs. Our hosting and analytics providers keep standard server logs (such as IP address and timestamp) for security and infrastructure monitoring. These logs are not used to identify or profile individual users.

We do not collect names, email addresses, passwords, payment information, or location data. We do not read form inputs, cookies, or authenticated session data from the websites you visit. We do not track your browsing across the web; we only see information about a page when you actively open the Extension on a Shopify store.

How we use the information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Identify the Shopify theme and apps on the page you are inspecting and return that information to you
  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Extension and our website
  • Understand product usage in aggregate
  • Respond to your support requests and uninstall feedback
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell or rent your data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use it for any purpose unrelated to the Extension's core functionality. We do not make any automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.

Legal basis for processing (GDPR). We process the limited information described above on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating, maintaining, and improving a free Chrome Extension. You can stop all processing at any time by uninstalling the Extension.

Sharing with third parties

We do not share your information with third parties for their marketing purposes. We rely on a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights or the safety of our users.

Chrome Extension permissions

The Extension requests only the permissions it needs to do its job:

  • Storage — to remember the anonymous identifier in your browser
  • Active tab — to read the Shopify theme and app information from the page you are actively inspecting
  • Scripting — to read theme information that the Shopify storefront publishes to the page

The Extension does not modify the pages you visit, inject ads, or read content from non-Shopify websites.

Data retention and your choices

You can stop all data collection at any time by uninstalling the Extension. The anonymous identifier stored in your browser is removed automatically when you uninstall.

We retain server-side data for as long as needed to operate the Extension, improve our app and theme detection, and comply with our legal obligations. Inspection records and analytics events may be retained in aggregated or anonymized form indefinitely.

If you would like us to delete data associated with your anonymous identifier from our servers, email us at the address below. Please include your identifier so we can locate the records — you can find it on the uninstall feedback page after uninstalling, in the user_id parameter of the URL.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding the information we hold about you, including the rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of that information, and the right to data portability. Because we do not collect account credentials or directly identifying information, the only data we typically hold tied to a specific user is keyed to the anonymous identifier described above.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address at the bottom of this page and include your anonymous identifier so we can locate the relevant records. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

California residents. We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights.

Security

We use HTTPS for all data transmitted between the Extension, our website, and our servers, and we restrict access to our database. Because we do not collect account credentials or directly identifying information, the risk associated with our data is minimal.

International users

Our servers are located in the United States. If you use the Extension from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have data protection laws different from those in your country. Where required, our service providers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards for international transfers.

Children

The Extension is intended for adults — typically merchants, agencies, and developers researching Shopify stores. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Chrome Web Store disclosures

The Extension's single purpose is to identify the Shopify theme and apps used on the page you are viewing.

We confirm that:

  • We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties outside of the service-provider relationships described above.
  • We do not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to the Extension's single purpose.
  • We do not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
